Simran’s Link is a voluntary resource. This has arisen out of Simran’s own story but also work over a number of years with south asian people who have faced disownment or been disowned . The aim of Simran’s Link is to’ raise awareness’ about the flight of those who fear being disowned by their families and communities, those who have had little or no link with their families for some years and the impact on them. In raising awareness we aim to give ‘voice’ to this issue to prevent the disownment of individuals, and in some cases their new families. We aim to raise this issue with compassion and a positive non-judgmental approach and outlook in respect of those who have been disowned.floral4

Simran’s Link is a community website to’ share views’ and link people in this situation wherever possible. The specific connection to being disowned relates to the misplaced notions of ‘honour’ and ‘shame’. We view ‘disownment’  in this context as an act of abuse against the human rights of an individual. This website is to support, befriend, and offer a positive community to people affected in this way.

Simran’s Link believes in ‘family’ as an individual’s right to belong, and is committed to reducing the suffering of individuals dealing with the loss of family and/or community or suffering due to reconnection issues relating to family. We highly respect your personal choices and therefore promise  never to push advice where it is not welcome, and only offer advice where it is requested. However, if professional support and guidance around reconnection with family is sought, we are willing to help members find appropriate resources to look at this. Wherever possible, we are committed to placing people who have experienced honour-based disownment issues at the forefront of guidance and support.

We strongly uphold and maintain confidentiality.

Simran’s Link also provides links with a wide range of other support groups including those for mixed relationships and forced marriages. It also provides a link for university students who are worried about’ arranged marriage’ or forced marriage, against their will. We welcome All age groups. The views of those using the forum are the individulas own.

We are committed to hearing and understanding what a birth/substitute family means to an individual, and will explore an individuals need for reconnection, however we would never advocate for the individual directly with family, unless this is supported appropriatly and only where risk is assessed and addressed. We understand the need for total confidentiality and, where there is risk of harm or emotional abuse, we would not encourage intervention. We will not judge your cultural views if they are in context of your situation.

Simran’s Link is for all people regardless of background, caste, race, religion, age, gender or disability. We welcome all experiences in relation to disownment in the context of the misplaced notion of ‘honour’ and ‘shame’.
